Always Been Double-Jointed? Here's What That Actually Means
We're not doctors. This page collects what the published research actually says about "double-jointed," so you have something concrete if you ever want to look into it further.
Maybe you could bend your thumb back to your wrist at parties, or your friends called you rubber-band arms, or a gym teacher once told you to stop showing off your elbows. "Double-jointed" isn't a real anatomical category, nobody has an extra joint, but the flexibility behind it is a real, measurable trait, and there's an actual scoring system for it.
The Beighton Score: How Double-Jointedness Is Actually Measured
The standard tool for measuring what people call double-jointedness is the Beighton Score, a validated nine-point test used in clinical research and diagnosis. It checks: whether each pinky bends back past 90 degrees, whether each thumb can be pulled back to touch the forearm, whether each elbow and each knee hyperextends, and whether you can bend forward with straight knees and place your palms flat on the floor. Each side counts separately for the paired joints, which is how the total reaches nine.
A score of 5 or more out of 9 counts as generalized joint hypermobility in adults. For adults over 50, the bar drops to 4 or more, since flexibility naturally declines with age and joints that were hypermobile at 20 may no longer test that way at 60.
Being flexible on its own is common and usually harmless. Plenty of people score high on the Beighton Score their whole lives without pain or injury. But when high flexibility comes with joint pain, frequent sprains or dislocations, or other systemic symptoms, there's a real diagnostic category for it: hypermobility spectrum disorders, and at the more severe end, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS). Most people who grew up doing joint party tricks never connect the dots, mainly because nobody ever mentions the Beighton Score exists.
