Why Are the Whites of My Eyes Slightly Blue?

A faint blue or grey tint to the sclera - the normally white part of the eye - is an easy thing to never think twice about, but it is a documented sign that shows up often in hypermobility research.
The Hypermobility Link Behind Light Blue Sclerae
The same 2023 study of 327 hEDS/HSD patients recorded light blue sclerae as one of the additional mucocutaneous features tracked beyond the official diagnostic criteria, finding it in 79.81% of the cohort - the second most common of the extra features measured, behind easy bruising at 80.28%.
The likely mechanism is the same one behind most hEDS-related connective tissue signs: the sclera is thinner or structured differently, letting the underlying dark choroid layer show through slightly, similar to how thin skin can show veins more visibly elsewhere in the body. The study documented the sign's prevalence rather than testing this mechanism directly, so that explanation is a reasonable inference from how sclera anatomy works, not something this specific study proved.

What to do about it
Blue sclerae on their own are not a medical emergency and do not need urgent attention. If you are pursuing or already have a hypermobility or hEDS diagnosis, this is worth mentioning as one more data point alongside the more central diagnostic criteria (joint hypermobility, skin changes, family history) - it is a supporting sign, not a standalone diagnostic one.
