Skin & bruising

Why do I bruise so easily

A bruise that shows up from a bump you barely felt, or one that seems way out of proportion to whatever caused it, is a common enough complaint that most people brush it off as clumsiness or just how their skin is.

Vitamin deficiencies, blood thinners, and aging skin are the usual explanations doctors check first, and for many people one of those accounts for it.

The Hypermobility Link Behind Easy Bruising

We're not doctors. Here's what a 2023 clinical review in JAAD found, pooling data across 140 studies and 839 patients: easy bruising and skin fragility show up consistently across Ehlers-Danlos syndrome subtypes. The review doesn't pin the mechanism down to anything more specific than connective tissue differences, so that's as far as the evidence goes. Anything more detailed than that is speculation, not something the research has confirmed.

For people who do notice this pattern, the Ehlers-Danlos Society's skin care guidance is worth knowing about: fragrance-free gentle cleansers, lukewarm rather than hot water, daily SPF, and silicone gel or sheets for scarring after skin injuries.

What to bring to a doctor

If bruising has been a lifelong pattern rather than something new, it's worth mentioning alongside any joint symptoms when talking to a doctor, since the two can point to the same underlying connective tissue picture. Our Skin Fragility and Easy Bruising page covers the fuller research and the skin care guidance in more depth.
